Location: Pomona
Building Area: 1,200 SF
Project Overview:
The Roots House is an innovative single-family house designed to demonstrate the potential of sustainable construction using all-wood materials. This project is a collaborative effort with Cal State Pomona's College of Environmental Design and College of Engineering, aiming to compete in a sustainability competition. The design emphasizes ecological responsibility, energy efficiency, and the use of renewable resources to create a home that is both environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
Key Objectives:
1. Sustainability
-
To create a house that minimizes environmental impact through the use of sustainably sourced wood and eco-friendly building practices.
-
To integrate passive solar design, high-performance insulation, and renewable energy systems to achieve net-zero energy consumption.
-
To showcase advanced wood construction techniques and innovative design solutions that can be replicated in other sustainable housing projects.
-
Affordability: To develop a cost-effective model that can be accessible to a wide range of families, promoting broader adoption of sustainable housing.
2. Design Process
-
Material Selection: The house will utilize locally sourced, FSC-certified timber, engineered wood products, and natural finishes to ensure durability and minimal environmental impact.
-
Passive Design: Orientation, shading devices, and natural ventilation strategies will be employed to reduce heating and cooling loads.
-
Renewable Energy: Solar panels, energy storage systems, and possibly a small-scale wind turbine will be integrated to meet the home's energy needs.
-
Water Management: Rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and low-flow fixtures will be implemented to reduce water consumption.
- Indoor Air Quality: Use of non-toxic materials and an advanced ventilation system will ensure a healthy living environment.
The Roots House represents a forward-thinking approach to sustainable housing. By leveraging the strengths of Cal State Pomona's multidisciplinary teams, the project aims to set a new standard for environmentally responsible construction and inspire future generations to embrace sustainable living.
